Travel to Lake McKenzie on Fraser Island

Dingo Fraser Island

Lake McKenzie is a perched lake on Fraser Island in Queensland, Australia and has crystal clear water, pure white silica sands and a magical place to have Christmas lunch!

Location: Lake McKenzie is within the Great Sandy National Park. 6.2 km southeast of Kingfisher Resort and 23km from Cornwell's Campground.

Cornwell's Campground was the first drive-in eastern beach campground after getting off the barge at Kingfisher Bay. Waking up to the crash of the waves on Christmas Day mixed with Princess's excitement that Santa had arrived was perfect. The tree branch Christmas tree with a few baubles and a wild flower as the star was all Santa needed to let him know where Princess was staying and remnants of the eaten Smartie Cookie, milk and carrots still remained on the table.

The presents were all found in the vestibule of the tent and luckily no dingoes opened them first! Santa proved Princess was a good girl and was nice enough to give her enough presents to keep her entertained for the rest of the holiday! The magical morning was topped off with Christmas lunch, consisting of cheese and crackers at Lake McKenzie while dining with a couple of kookaburras.

Lake McKenzie

The crystal clear water of the perched Lake McKenzie allowed us to get great underwater shots however don't let the water fool you, it's icy cold. The water comes directly from rain and there are no creeks or rivers running in or out of the lake. If the lake is polluted, it would stay there for a long time.

The signage in the area is very clear, leave the lake without a trace. Only 5 rules stand between a crystal clear Lake McKenzie or a unimaginable mess.

5 rules when visiting Lake McKenzie

  1. Don't wear insect repellent or sunscreen when swimming
  2. Don't have a bath with detergent, soap, shampoo etc.
  3. Don't pee in the water and use the provided toilets, don't pee in the bush!
  4.  Take all your rubbish with you, even cigarette butts
  5. Don't destroy the trees because you're destroying shade. Obviously someone didn't read the sign and decided to decorate a tree on the beach!

As dinner time came close, the beach cleared and it was unfortunately time to leave however it won't be forgotten!
