Travel from Winton to Mount Isa
Do you like Dinosaurs? If the answer is yes, you will love Winton, Central Queensland.
Winton greeted us with scattered road signs indicating whether they were open or closed and we soon learnt, Winton is a flood prone area, and when it rains in Winton, it pours. Luckily when we arrived after the 16.5 hour, 1,400km drive out of the Gold Coast all roads were open. Our only stop in the destination was the Age of Dinosaur museum which surprised us with local current and historical knowledge. Annabelle loved the video presentation and the bones on display of Banjo, an Australovenator wintonensis and Matilda, a Diamantinasaurus matildae.
Banjo, Matilda and other remains were displayed in the preparation shed where volunteer diggers were removing rock from the ancient bones in front of us. If you are driving through, the museum is a not-for-profit organisation which relies on generosity to continue learning about Australia's dinosaurs and is worth the stop. Mount Isa, I am coming back to see more of your beautiful town! After 5 hours of driving and 470 kms, we left Winton and arrived in Mount Isa late at night. Almost immediately we saw the magical mines from the top of the hill. We were both tired, however the town instantly intrigued us, the mines went on for kilometers, the people were friendly and the night air was warm. After thousands of kilometers of cows, bush, kangaroos and road, we were nicely surprised that the town was large and organised. We even took the opportunity to drive around even though the petrol station was on the main street. While filling up at the petrol station I couldn't help but notice the Honorable Bob Katter's poster showing how proud he was to be representing Mount Isa in the Division of Kennedy and looking around, I understood why.
