Kakadu National Park - South Alligator River
Have you seen a wild crocodile up close? I've seen two! South Alligator River is 213km East of Darwin and to our surprise, a good spot to see a wild crocodile or two! Driving over the bridge we saw straight lines edging into the sand embankment. Surely, they couldn't be crocodile tracks? On the left of the highway stood the entry to the boat ramp area and a handy public toilet. We drove down to the boat ramp for a photo and straight ahead a huge saltwater crocodile dove from the embankment into the water. He was massive! There was no chance I was getting out of the car for a photo now! I was staying in the safety of my car for sure! We watched with the binoculars his beady eyes sitting just above the water and then I spotted the second one to the left of the boat ramp, only 10-15m away from the car. The second one wasn't as big as the first however he was a bit more curious and swimming towards the car. Princess loved it, I was a little less sure. I didn't want to be on the following days front page newspaper as a crocodile statistic! I was outta there! I finally believed the "Danger Crocodile risk" signs now! As the sun started to set and the dash lights in the car refused to turn on, it was time to head to the safety of a big town, Darwin.
