Katherine

Katherine Northern Territory

Do you need a holiday? I know I did.

Visiting Katherine 320km south of Darwin was a great regional hub to stock up on supplies and gather some inspiration for the rest of your journey. Firstly, I'll applaud the Patrol, 420,000kms on the clock, and it didn't leave us stranded on the side of the hot highway (although some intervention was required!) It was for this reason arriving in Katherine had an air of distinction! McDonalds,

The Coffee Club, Coles, Woolworths, Target etc. all in the main street which definitely made me feel at ease. With reborn confidence, we headed to the Katherine Visitor Centre http://www.visitkatherine.com.au/ for inspiration. Browsing the information for Kakadu and Litchfield National Park, Darwin, The Kimberley's etc.

I couldn't help but feel excited. So much to see, so many amazing landmarks to uncover. We collected what we needed and headed back into town. I was on a mission to buy new camping mats, sheets, a camp fan and a chair. The new fan was first on our list. Camping in Mataranka with bats flying above our heads, spraying everything with bat poo during the witching hour and the monsoonal rain caused us to zip the tent up.

The humidity was instantly horrible! If I was going to survive, I needed a fan! We picked up a 12v Coleman fan which was worth its weight in gold for the consecutive nights to come and it was time to buy some new camp mats. Prior to leaving home for our holiday I made the horrible assumption that the new 3sec pop-up tent would fit all our bedding in it.

I played Tetris with the queen size air bed, and a single camping mat for one night too long. It was time everyone had their own single self inflatable mat! Happy with the new mats from Katherine Camping and Fishing store (and secretly worried about all the rifles on view) we visited Target for some sheets, Woolworths for some food and BWS for Cider and Beer.

The important things in life! After a day in civilisation we were again ready to head to Nitmiluk National Park!
