Swimming in Champagne on Fraser Island

Champagne pools Fraser Island

On an island made almost entirely of sand, rocky headlands like this are special and worth exploring with your bare feet!

Location: 95km north of Kingfisher Bay resort in the Great Sandy National Park

The 800m one way boardwalk takes you through the Rocky Headland in either direction from the Northern and Southern car park, alternatively if there's no parking and the buses are taking up too much room, there is a short walkway from the Eastern beach. Just don't be a douche like the young "dude" in the Ford Ranger who blocked the car from reversing in the beach carpark. Remember, you're parking in soft sand, you need more turning space than normal!

If you are more adventurous, you can walk to Waddy Point from Champagne Pools. A 6km beach walk north of Champagne Pools allows you to reach the northernmost tip of the Rocky Headlands.

Cars are not permitted to drive between Champagne Pools and Waddy Point, therefore this stretch of road allows walkers to enjoy the serenity and lazy 4wders like me to enjoy sitting behind a bogged Rav4 in very soft sand. After 4 Maxx Trax, 6 people, me included and burnt feet, we were able to lend a successful helping hand and the very deeply bogged Rav4 was physically pushed out of the way.

While enjoying Champagne Pools, it is important to look out for jellyfish which can be seen floating in the warmer water and unpredictable waves. The waves crashing into the slippery Rocky Headlands can often be overpowering and serious injuries have occurred here in the past.
