Travel guide - Where can you enter through a corridor through time?

Flinders Ranges

Home of the Geological Trail, Brachina Gorge offers a corridor through time which was quite memorable. How can you get there? Read on to find out!

Location: 190km north of Port Augusta, the Flinders Ranges National Park has outlasted 540 million years of rain, hail and shine.

Top 10 things to do and experience in the Flinders Ranges

  1. Travel along Skytrek Willow Springs Station to see the area at its best.
  2. Experience the natural amphitheatre of Wilpena Pound.
  3. Stare out over the rugged terrain quartzite ranges and plains at Brachina Gorge.
  4. Watch the sun rise or set at Razorback Lookout and watch the ranges turn from orange and red to brown and golden.
  5. Spot satellites between the millions of viewable stars.
  6. Look up to see a Wedged Tail Eagle gliding over the ranges using the warm thermal updrafts to reach greater heights.
  7. Watch the Peregrine Falcon's high-speed dive to catch its prey.
  8. Try and sneak up on an Emu (it's hilarious!)
  9. Count the different wildflowers in bloom.
  10. Walk up Arkaroo Rock to view the Aboriginal Artwork.

My experience

Flinders Ranges

Flinders Ranges was one of the first stops before we travelled to Lake Eyre and across the Simpson Desert. The ranges were breathtaking and family friendly. Princess was 16 months old and she found the area fascinating, especially all the wildlife.

We paid the fee to travel across Skytrek from Willow Springs station which was well worth it. The self drive track was challenging for our Patrol which continued to overheat on us as the ridge track is very steep in sections however when we called it quits for the night, we were pleasantly surprised at the well kept designated camp spots and the especially spectacular night sky.

The wildlife was amazing. The eagles and falcons were no strangers by the end of the trip and the birds of prey could often be spotted diving at high speeds. The emus were frequently spotted and after lunch Princess tried to sneak up on one which caused us both a bit of a fright!

I'm not much of a desert person and would much prefer to spot whales on the beach, however Flinders Ranges was a magical place I'm glad I got to experience.
